DENTAL HYGIENE /

PERIODONTAL HEALTH

Maintaining that great smile.

In dentistry, there are many diseases to be aware of, but two main diseases that we are constantly fighting.  Most people are mindful of dental caries (cavities) but are less aware of periodontal (gum) disease. Although most individuals focus on the health of their teeth; the health of the gum tissue and surrounding bone (the periodontal structures) are imperative to optimal wellness.

Periodontal disease is a complex condition in which bacteria travels underneath the gum tissue where they cannot be adequately cleaned or removed with normal daily oral hygiene.

If not continually removed by a dental professional, these bacteria begin to eat away at the gum tissue and bone surrounding the teeth.

Receiving early treatment and being diligent about maintenance are both keys to ensuring successful management of periodontal disease and preventing tooth loss.  Appropriate treatment also reduces bacteria that can be extremely harmful to other parts of the body.

Oral cancer screenings

Oral cancer screenings are part of your routine dental examination. During the exam, we will observe your lips, tongue, and the inside of your mouth, checking for red or white patches or unusual sores. We will feel for lumps, swelling and gently pull the tongue aside to get an even better view. We may also use a special light, dye, or other procedure to help us check any suspect areas. If anything out of the ordinary is identified, a biopsy can easily be completed.

It is important to keep in mind that certain habits can contribute to the causation of oral cancer. Tobacco use of any kind, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco, are some of the many culprits.
